Press Release

Driver card referendum campaign victory

Press release subtitle:
Approval for November 2014 ballot
Friday, October 18, 2013

Oregonians for Immigration reform and the group Protect Oregon Driver Licenses (PODL) is happy
to announce that after the careful scrutiny of the Secretary of State's office our referendum petition
has been accepted and Senate Bill 833 will be placed on the November 2014 general Election ballot.

“I’m glad Oregonians will have an opportunity to vote on whether the state should issue driver cards
to illegal immigrants,” said State Representative Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer, Newberg and St. Paul) one
of the Co-Chief Petitioners on the referendum. “Based on the overwhelming number of emails and
phone calls I have received, most people are opposed to granting such cards. I hope going forward
voters will take a hard look at why it’s important for the state to only endorse driver licenses for those
who have proper legal status.”

On May 1st 2013 the Governor signed into law SB 833 which would give driver privilege cards to
people in the country illegally. That same day Oregonians for Immigration Reform announced it
would be filing a referendum petition to put the issue on the ballot so that Oregon voters could
decide if this is the right thing to do in Oregon.

PODL was formed to operate the referendum petition signature campaign and recently turned in a
total of nearly 71,000 signatures (58,142 were required.)

“I’m pleased to see the people of the state of Oregon take this matter very seriously. I am so grateful
to everyone who helped gather signatures, and all those who took the time to sign a petition," said
State Representative Sal Esquivel (R-Medford) another Co-Chief Petitioner."Now the hard work
begins between now and the election next November.”

The new law, which was scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2014 will be put on hold until
after the outcome of the election. Click here for announcement by the Oregon Department of
