Oregon Sheriffs vote to oppose driver cards for illegal aliens

Many thanks to the Oregon Sheriffs Political Action Committee, which, on April 16, 2014, issued a public statement that the Sheriffs “have voted overwhelmingly to oppose Measure 301, which provides ‘drivers cards’ to people who cannot prove their legal presence in the United States.”

In the Sheriffs news release, Clatsop County Sheriff Tom Bergin stated: “Offering the privilege to drive to people who are breaking the law makes no sense to those of us who enforce the law. It just doesn’t pass the ‘common sense’ test. Oregon’s Sheriffs urge voters to oppose Measure 301.”

The Sheriffs of Oregon PAC represents 36 elected sheriffs, one from each county in Oregon. The organization requires a super majority before SOO-PAC can take a position on a political issue. Twenty-eight sheriffs voted to oppose driver cards, and the remaining 8 have not taken a public position on the measure.

SB 833 was passed by the Oregon Legislature on April 30, 2013, granting official driving privileges and driver cards to illegal aliens. Oregonians for Immigration Reform (OFIR) officers almost immediately petitioned for a Referendum on the bill, and with broad public support, succeeded easily in gathering sufficient signatures by October 2013. Referendum 301 will be on the November 2014 ballot, enabling citizens to vote NO in November to giving driver cards to illegal aliens.
